Common Name: Easter Cactus, Christmas Cactus, Holiday Cactus
Botanical Name: Zygocactus (often Schlumbergera hybrids)
Origin: Native to Brazilian coastal rainforests
Description:
The Zygocactus is a popular holiday favorite known for its beautiful, vibrant pink flowers that bloom around Easter or Christmas, depending on the variety. Unlike desert cacti, these cacti thrive in humid, tropical environments and have flat, segmented stems with delicate, bright blossoms that bring a splash of color indoors during cooler months. Their cheerful blooms and easy care make them a beloved houseplant worldwide.
🌱 Care Tips:
Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the stems and flowers. A spot near an east or north-facing window is ideal.
Water:
Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season (spring through fall), but never soggy. Reduce watering in winter after flowering. Allow the top inch of soil to dry before watering again.
Humidity:
Likes higher humidity; mist occasionally or place near a humidifier to help encourage flowering.
Temperature:
Thrives between 15°C and 24°C (59°F–75°F). Avoid sudden temperature changes and drafts.
Soil:
Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally a cactus or succulent mix amended with organic matter like peat moss.
Fertiliser:
Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during active growth (spring and summer). Stop fertilising when the plant is dormant.
Flowering:
To encourage blooming, provide about 12-14 hours of darkness each night for 6 weeks before the expected bloom time, and keep cooler nighttime temps around 12–15°C (54–59°F).
Pet Friendly:
✅ Non-toxic to cats and dogs.
