Common Name: African Milk Tree ‘Red’, Cathedral Cactus (though it's not a true cactus)
Origin: Central Africa
Description:
The Euphorbia trigona ‘Rubra’, also known as the African Milk Tree Red, is a striking succulent with tall, vertical stems and triangular sides lined with small thorns and tear-shaped burgundy leaves. What sets this variety apart is its deep reddish-purple coloring — it’s bold, architectural, and a real statement-maker in any indoor or outdoor setting.
Despite its dramatic look, it's surprisingly easy to care for and fast-growing when happy. Perfect for adding height and personality to plant collections!
🌱 Care Tips:
Light:
Loves bright, indirect light and even some direct sun. The more sun it gets, the more vibrant its red tones. Indoors, place it near a sunny window. Outdoors, protect from harsh afternoon sun to prevent sunburn.
Water:
Water only when the soil is completely dry. In warmer months, this might be every 2–3 weeks. In winter, reduce watering to once a month or less. It’s drought-tolerant and dislikes soggy soil.
Humidity:
Prefers dry conditions and is well-suited for average indoor environments. No extra humidity needed.
Temperature:
Thrives in temperatures between 18°C and 27°C (65°F–80°F). Keep it away from cold drafts and protect from frost.
Soil:
Use a gritty, well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Make sure your pot has drainage holes.
Fertiliser:
Feed with a diluted cactus fertiliser once a month during spring and summer. No need to fertilise in cooler months.
Pet Friendly:
❌ No. Like many Euphorbias, it has a milky sap that can be toxic and irritating to skin, eyes, and pets if ingested. Handle with care, especially when pruning.
