Common Name: Living Stones
Origin: Southern Africa (Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa)
Description:
Lithops are one of nature’s most fascinating succulents—often called "Living Stones" because they mimic the look of pebbles to blend into their arid, rocky environments. These tiny, split-bodied plants come in a range of earthy colors and patterns, sometimes with soft pinks, greens, or grays. Each "stone" is actually two fused leaves, and once a year, a beautiful daisy-like flower pops out from the center.
They’re a collector's favorite and great for sunny windowsills or rock gardens. Though they’re low maintenance, Lithops do best when their care is dialed in just right.
🌱 Care Tips:
Light:
Needs bright, direct light for at least 4–5 hours daily. A sunny windowsill is perfect. Without enough sun, Lithops can stretch and lose their compact form.
Water:
Lithops have a very specific watering cycle:
-
Spring & Autumn (active growth & flowering): Water sparingly only when the plant looks slightly wrinkled and the soil is bone dry.
-
Summer (dormant): Minimal to no watering.
-
Winter (shedding leaves): Do not water as the new body absorbs moisture from the old one.
Overwatering is the #1 way to kill a Lithops. Err on the side of too dry.
Humidity:
Loves dry air. Keep away from humid areas like bathrooms or kitchens.
Temperature:
Ideal range: 20°C–28°C (68°F–82°F). Can tolerate cooler nights but not frost.
Soil:
Very gritty, fast-draining cactus mix. Add extra pumice or coarse sand for better drainage.
Fertiliser:
Not necessary, but if you want to encourage flowering, you can use a diluted cactus fertiliser once in early autumn.
Pet Friendly:
✅ Yes! Lithops are non-toxic to pets and people.
