Davallia fejeensis, commonly known as the Rabbit’s Foot Fern, is a distinctive and charming fern beloved for its fluffy, furry rhizomes that creep over the surface of the pot—resembling a rabbit’s foot. Native to Fiji and surrounding Pacific Islands, this tropical epiphyte grows in the shaded, humid forest understory, clinging to rocks and trees.
The delicate, lace-like fronds emerge from the furry rhizomes and arch gracefully, creating a lush and whimsical appearance. This fern is perfect for hanging baskets or pots where its unique rhizomes can be showcased.
Care Tips for Davallia fejeensis
Light:
Thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some shade but should be protected from direct sun which can scorch the fronds.
Watering:
Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Mist the rhizomes occasionally to keep them from drying out.
Humidity:
Prefers high humidity. Ideal for bathrooms or kitchens. Use a humidifier or humidity tray in drier spaces.
Temperature:
Enjoys temperatures between 16°C to 24°C (60°F to 75°F). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
Soil:
Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix or a mix designed for ferns. The soil should retain some moisture but never become waterlogged.
Fertiliser:
Feed with a diluted liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn). Avoid overfeeding.
Potting:
Repot every 1–2 years in spring. Choose a shallow pot to allow rhizomes to creep and spread.
Fun Tip:
The fuzzy rhizomes don’t like to be buried! Let them sprawl over the pot’s edge for that signature "rabbit foot" look.
